With the aviation industry committed to building back better following the global pandemic, the good news is that sustainability remains a key topic of interest across the industry. As a drop-in fuel, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is one of the most promising solutions for decarbonising the aviation sector in the short term and will play a key role in meeting the industry’s decarbonisation goals. As such, we expect to see it being more widely available during 2022. The SAF that Air bp supplies, provides a lifecycle carbon reduction of around 80% compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces. Before being delivered to an airport, SAF is blended at up to 50% with traditional jet fuel. Certified as jet fuel, it can drop straight into existing infrastructure and aircraft. While the highest blend possible today is 50%, there are many initiatives testing 100% SAF blends in ground and flight tests to determine if it will be safe in the future...
